Austin Then and Now

Austin Then and Now

Seventeen of the original Moonlight Towers still survive around town today. In the 1970s their historical value was formally recognized by the state and federal governments. They are now an integral part of Austin’s landscape. In the 1960s the tower in Zilker Park became the town’s alternative, artificial Christmas tree. In the early 1990s every tower came down and received a total restoration, repainting, and preventative maintenance. They look brand new and completely original save for the historical plaque that each one bears. The systems were common in the 1800s, but Austin is the only place in the United States where so many fine and functional examples can be seen.
